It was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria during the Crimean War and has been bestowed upon 96 Australians under the Imperial honours system for service in the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, the Russian Civil War and the Vietnam War. Four Australian soldiers have been awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, introduced in 1991, for actions in Afghanistan.

Corporal Cameron Baird of the 2nd Commando Regiment had already received the Medal for Gallantry and was on his fourth tour of Afghanistan when he was killed in the final moments of an operation at Ghawchak village, Uruzgan Province, on 22 June, 2013. Baird led assaults on an enemy-held compound before he was fatally wounded by small arms fire. For his actions that day, Baird was posthumously awarded the 100th Victoria Cross to an Australian. Nearly a century earlier, Lance-Corporal Albert Jacka of the 14th Battalion was awarded the Victoria Cross – the first to an Australian in the First World War – for single-handedly defeating a Turkish attack on a position known as Courtney’s Post at Gallipoli on 19 May, 1915. He later went to the Western Front where he rose to the rank of Captain and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for further acts of bravery.

https://johnnyboyauctions.com.au/products/%f0%9f%8e%962017-limited-edition-coin-collection-victoria-cross%f0%9f%8c%9frare-coin%f0%9f%92%b0australia-br-b-style-color-03236a-1-121-b-br-b-style-color-03236a-25c-coin-b-1
